Analysis of Parachute deployment on a drone at a very high altitude in emergency cases

Abstract

There are studies that the use of drones is difficult due to the low stability of GPS in urban areas. Without GPS, the autonomous waypoint flight of the drone is not possible. Also,if wind drift occurs, the drone will not be able to calibrate its position. The drone can hardly plan its flight for missions when GPS service is degraded. In addition, RF interference and multipath effects can interfere with the flight of drones in the urban area. In this case, the signal for manipulating the drone is disturbed, so that the operator cannot maneuver the drone remotely. Drones that are thus disturbed during their flight are more likely to cause accidents in urban areas. Therefore, we need a safe landing  system for public safety against drones that lose connection and position (emergency situation).

Problem Statement

After the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, the usage of drones has been drastically increased. They have been used as the reliable means for the survey of different ancient historical places that have been damaged due to earthquakes. The mapping of the damage caused by the earthquake has been easily done with the help of drones. The drones used for such activities are commercially available drones for specific purposes. Due to this, there is little research in the field of drones in Nepal. Moreover the commercial drones are used more for aerial cinematography. There must be research in the field of drones so that it can cover multiple fields of application. There are multiple sectors to have research in the field of drones such as telemetry optimization, safe landing, accurate positioning,etc. There is a need for research in these sectors so that the drone industry in Nepal can sustain.

Possible Outcome

There is different research going on for this problem to make drones safe for flight as well as for safe landing. But there is a particular problem where the battery short circuit or hardware damage of the drone can lead to direct fall of the drone to land without the control. In such conditions, the deployment of the parachute can help the drone to fall slowly to the ground with minimum damage. This is the proposed research topic and probable solution for the emergency situation of the drones fail-safe.
